LECTURES

Week 8

For week 8, we started the module with Ms. Jennifer doing a tutorial for the webtoon project. She showed us her sketch in Photoshop and taught us about panel arrangements, camera angles, compositions and etc.  After sketching several panels we then proceed to a lecture session with Ms. Anis.

For the lecture, Ms. Anis presented us with how to make comics.

To startup making comics, we need to come up with an idea. To get ideas, we can get it from our experiences. Good ideas never come from browsing google aimlessly. We can come up with ideas by brainstorming or even mind mapping.

5 Assignment practice (building a mental library)
  1. Watch cartoons/movies
  2. Play new games
  3. Read new mangas/comics/graphic novels
  4. Listen to different genres of music (ambient/cultural)
  5. Try a new dish. Trying something new will stimulate the brain, and jumpstart the cells
Upon finishing the lecture, Ms. Anis also showed us past students' works that can help us visualize what we are going to do for the webtoon and motion comic project.

Week 9

During our ninth week, Ms. Anis started the module with a presentation about transitions.

Moment-to-Moment

One of the most common forms, metaphorically think of it as a blank or two between seconds of a film, it can be used to slow down and draw out the action, but be aware, if over utilized it can make the comics dull and laborious to draw and read. Moment-to-moment transition is the constraint along with page and panel form, that most defines storyboarding from comics or sequential art.

Action-to-Action

The next most common is action-to-action. Action-to-action is a more or less finely sliced version of moment-to-moment and typically focuses on significant events or movement from panel to panel, and over larger intervals of time between moments.

Week 10

On week 10, Ms. Jennifer showed did a tutorial for the motion comic to guide us on what to do in After Effects. She used many compositions for each panel. She showed to us that we can just do small moving animations for our motion comic project.

INSTRUCTIONS

For the third project, we were told to create a webtoon and a motion comic. We are required to create a horror-themed comic for this project. Before sketching out the comic, we must first create the 3-act structures with interesting twists and plots. After completing the 3-act structure, we can then proceed to sketch within the range of 30-50 panels. The content for this comic must be PG-13 and safe for work. The webtoon format is 800 x 1280 px.

Upon finishing the webtoon comic, we are required to create a motion comic. We have to upload our motion comic to Youtube with video format such as:
  • Video format (h.264, 25 fps)
  • Youtube resolution and aspect ratio 720p
  • Video within 1 - 3 minutes.
So I created 2 stories for my webtoon comic.

First story:

Once upon a time, there lived a little girl born from a rich family, and her name is Anna Frantz. She has a butler that is very loyal to her and very special to her. They live in a town where many people say is creepy and haunted. One day, it is reported that the Frantz family has been murdered and had a hole located on the left side of the chest. There’s also a rumor that a faceless person has been spotted wandering around the mansion.

One day, there was a little girl who was being bullied by her classmates because she was storytelling about the haunted mansion and the faceless person. The bullies thought that she was just fooling around. Because of that, the bullies went to the haunted mansion to see whether what the little girl said was correct. After several days, the bullies were reported missing. Because of that too, the little girl went to the mansion to find the bullies if they are still there. She wandered around the mansion and found the bodies of the bullies with a hole in the chest. She suddenly heard a sound behind her and found a lady with a long neck staring at her. The lady approached her as the little girl was trembling on the ground and opened her huge mouth trying to gobble her up.

Until finally, an ax suddenly hits her face and knocks her over to the ground. The little girl was saved, not for long. The man turned out to be the faceless person that she said to the bullies. She then met the same fate with the bullies and the man took her heart. The man then went to a room where there were many hearts scattered on the ground and a dead body of Anna Frantz. The man was her butler desperately trying to revive her from the dead using other little girls’ hearts. Second story:

One day, there were high school students who were staying in a villa on their school trip. That night, they were storytelling about horror scenarios that they have ever experienced. One of the people, Karl, tells them that he can actually see ghosts. Things weren’t that scary until suddenly they heard a knocking sound on the window and the door. They checked on the door and saw nothing outside, while they saw a fingerprint on the window. At that moment, they weren’t feeling good and were planning on going to the teacher’s place while having to walk in the night. While they were walking in the dark, they were disturbed by creepy sounds coming from different directions. Karl tells them to look straight and don’t bother looking somewhere else. His face was pale and the others were shocked by that, making them very scared. There were ghosts everywhere on them and one person unintentionally looked behind. Because of that, the temperature gets low suddenly, and the ghosts approach the group by looking straight at their eyes to check whether they can really see them. Because of that too, Karl was terrified and walked slower. The ghosts were feeling suspicious about him. Until finally, they overcame the situation and reached the teacher’s place. Karl told the teacher about the whole experience and asked the teacher whether they can stay at their house. He was glad until his friends asked him who he was talking to.

After getting feedback from Ms. Anis, I decided to pick on the first story for my webtoon comic. Before creating my webtoon comic sketches I decided to create a sketch for two of my characters. The butler and the long-neck woman (female butler).

After drawing these 2 characters, I then proceed to sketch the whole webtoon comic.

For my mansion sketch, I search on Pinterest to use an image as my reference.

I decided to name my webtoon comic "Faceless Man", and proceed to digitize them in Illustrator so that I can upload it to Webtoon.

Digitizing

I made my webtoon comic and counted that I have 45 panels for my webtoon. Before finalizing my webtoon, I wanted to find a suitable font for my comic. So I searched some fonts on the internet so that I can use them for my webtoon comic.

So I finalized it and export them as PDF to upload to Webtoon.

Motion Comic

I then proceed to Adobe After Effect to give animation for my webtoon comic.

I make 1 composition for 1 page and combined them together to create the motion comic. I then added background songs to my motion comic and finalized them.

FEEDBACK

Week 9
Ms. Anis recommended I pick the first story. Ms. Anis said that I should add a character backstory for the woman with a long neck. For my sketch, she suggested I put up a picture frame of the butler, the little lady, and the woman. They said that I should try to express a feature for the woman with a long neck so that they know that it was the woman from the frame. For example, add the bowtie on the woman, and when the woman with a long neck appears show the bowtie.

Week 12
For the part when the girls have a close-up look, try to make an animation of the speech bubble and maybe add minor animations (head shaking or blinking). They said that the transition on page 3 is nice too.

REFLECTIONS

This project is the most frustrating one for me. It took me a lot of time to complete the sketches and draw them in Illustrator. It took me so long to draw them but the process where I use After Effect takes a longer time. I was looking up to the internet on solving some problems that I have faced during this project but eventually, I get to know my problem and solved them. I guess I can say that I have gained some knowledge and getting a little bit more familiar with the After Effect software. Even though, it was frustrating I still get experience on After Effect so that I can use it more smoothly for future modules in this University. The easiest part of this project is the part when I had to make the 3-act structure. To be honest, I have been thinking about a story even before the project has started. I was a little bit excited when I heard that we are required to make a webtoon comic that had a horror theme. I'm quite surprised that I think about my story quick since I read quite some horror manga. Even though this project was fun and all, the process of doing it is quite hard and long but it's worth the time and experience.
