LECTURES
Week 5
During the fifth week, Ms. Anis presented to us about rhythm, movement, and chiaroscuro.
Rhythm
Having rhythm in art is one of the most difficult aspects to achieve/explain. To put it in a different context, good music makes a good beat, and a good beat makes a good rhythm.
Movement
We can create 'movement' in artworks by using basic visual elements. The visual elements include:

Week 6
During week 6's lecture, Ms. Anis was reviewing the past lectures (week 2 - 4) to the class.
The previous lectures can be found here: https://reaganmahadi.blogspot.com/2021/08/illustration-and-visual-narrative-task.html
Week 7
For our seventh week, Ms. Anis started the class with a lecture about storytelling basics and 3-acts structure.|
Central Theme
The theme is what the story is really about. It's the main idea or underlying meaning. Often it's the storyteller's personal opinion on the subject matter. A story may have both a major theme and minor themes.
Major Theme
Major theme is an idea that is intertwined and repeated throughout the entire narrative.
Minor Theme
Minor theme is an idea that appears more subtly and doesn't necessarily repeat.
Conflict
The conflict is what drives the story. It's what creates the tension and builds suspense, which are the elements that make a story interesting. If there are no conflicts in a story, there won't be any compelling story to tell thus making the audience lose interest and care less.
Conflict is what engages the audience. It's what keeps them white-knuckled, at the edge of their seats, waiting impatiently to see if the protagonists will overcome their obstacle.
Characters
A story usually includes a number of characters, each with a different role or purpose. Regardless of how many characters a story has, however, there are almost always protagonists and antagonists.
Central Characters
These characters are vital to the development of the story. The plot revolves around them.
Protagonist
The protagonist is the main character of the story. He or she has a clear goal to accomplish or a conflict to overcome. Although protagonists don't always need to be admirable, they must command an emotional involvement from the audience.
Antagonist
Antagonists oppose protagonists, standing between them and their ultimate goals. The antagonist can be presented in the form of any person, place, thing, or situation that represents a tremendous obstacle to the protagonist.
Three-Acts Structure
The 3-acts structure consists of:

INSTRUCTIONS
Task 2: Decisive Moment
For our second task, decisive moment, we were told to create an artwork about a decisive moment that happened in a movie. For this task, we are able to use any tools in Illustrator, unlike the first task.
Sketches
For this sketch, I tried to recreate the moment when the main character from the anime gets the grimoire when he was unable to use any magic.
As for this sketch, I tried to recreate the moment when Doctor Strange was trying to use the Eye of Agamotto.
After receiving feedback from both Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer, I had to do more research for this task so I searched on more movies. I suddenly thought of the movie Big Hero 6 and I found one decisive moment in the movie that I can make as a poster.
This is the moment when Baymax sacrifices himself to save Hiro and Dr. Callaghan's daughter that has been staying in the realm inside the portal for a long time. This is an emotional scene where Hiro has to leave his robot that is made by his brother.
Digitization
I digitized my sketch in Illustrator, results:

Fig. 2.5 Big Hero 6 poster
I changed the color and applied more chiaroscuro to Baymax's leg parts, other than that I also changed the title. Thus after completing the poster design, I proceed to animation.
I made more artboards for each frame and used Photoshop to create the GIF.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer suggested I find other scenes since my sketches don't really show any decisive moment, so I had to do more research.
Week 7
Ms. Anis asked me to change the color because it makes the title not visible.
Week 9
Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer suggested I add some fiery effects on the fire and make them bigger so that they can be more visible. Ms. Jennifer also suggested I look up to the scene again so that I can have a reference on the fire animation. They also said that I should add a quote on the bottom part of my poster since it looks so plain.
REFLECTIONS
Week 5
I had fun drawing the sketches since I really like drawing characters. I took the manga club in high school and drew a lot of manga characters, so I enjoy drawing them.
Week 6
It took me some time to find a decisive moment from a movie. Eventually, I found one movie that I remembered the scene which is Big Hero 6, and so I used it for my poster.
Week 7
During the process of digitization, it was really messy. It took me a long time to do unnecessary stuff just because it was messy. So, the digitization process was pretty long but I got it done in the end.
Week 8
When I was in the process of making the animation, I had to watch some videos about how to do animation on Photoshop. I ended up using the timeline method for Photoshop since it was used during typography class.

We can create 'movement' in artworks by using basic visual elements. The visual elements include:
- Shapes
- Lines
Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro refers to the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface. (Chiaro means bright, and Scuro means dark).

Chiaroscuro is used to:
- Increase dramatic tension
- Create sensational effect
- Pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
- Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces
Chiaroscuro is also a great study of form and value practice.

Three-Acts Structure
The 3-acts structure consists of:
- Setup
- Rising tension
- Conflict
- Resolution
Setup
The world in which the protagonist exists prior to the journey. The setup usually ends with the conflict being revealed.
Rising Tension
The series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome. Each obstacle is usually more difficult and with higher stakes than the previous one.
Conflict
The point of highest tension, and the major decisive turning point for the protagonist.
Resolution
The conflict's conclusion. This is where the protagonist finally overcomes the conflict, learns to accept it, or is ultimately defeated by it. Regardless, this is where the journey ends.
After explaining the three acts structure Ms. Anis gave us homework. We are required to prepare a short story for us to base our character on. We are required to employ the three-act structure, but limit the word count to a maximum of 300 words only.
