LECTURES

Week 8 is independent learning week so there is no class. Ms. Jinchi sent us a pre-recorded lecture video about a sense of place.

The Importance of Observation

Being observant means being attentive to your surroundings, paying attention to the details, and being analytical. Observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, and such.

Observing is an active act of equating information, through the sense, of a subject matter in its natural setting. Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what we want to do. Observation is important as it enables them to see "problems", as well as get ideas for solutions to those problems.

Project 2: Sense of Place

Visual Research

Before I start drawing sketches for my design I headed to Pinterest to find some inspiration.

Idea Exploration and Description

I looked upon my gallery to find some pictures that I took when I was traveling.

Fig. 4 Pictures I took from Shanghai

These are some of the pictures I took at the location near the Shanghai tower. I'm planning on using these pictures to create a sketch from it.

Fig. 5 Sketch 1

My sketch shows a place where a person is lost in the crowd. It also has a background of a tower and buildings that are located on the other side.

Feedback

Ms. Jinchi said that I might want to recall the feelings/experiences I had in those places so that I can produce a more meaningful design. I also need to apply my knowledge of design principles.

When I was traveling there I remembered that my family and I was trying to go to the tower for a long time. We were quite lost and had to ask for people and use the map for guidance. We also saw many street signs on the way. For my sketch, I have an idea of putting many signs and a person holding a map that finally finds the destination.

Fig. 6 Sketch 2

For my sketch, I used Fig. 1.3 as my reference.

I digitized my sketch and came up like this:

Fig. 7 Sense of place design 1

I got another feedback from Ms. Jinchi that the first sketch has a better composition compared to the second sketch. Ms. Jinchi suggested I add signages from the second sketch to the pole. She also said that the size of the signages should be slightly different from each other, don't make them too big so that I can balance them with the building in the middle. She also mentioned that the face of the middle person can be bigger so that the person can be the main focus of being lost.

Final Outcome

Fig. 9 Final sense of place design - PDF

My design shows a person in the middle is the focus that is feeling anxious that he is lost in the crowd. Meanwhile, I showed the buildings in the background that show the sense of place on the person being in Shanghai. I also showed the signs on the left side to express the environment more.

REFLECTIONS

When I was listening to the lecture, I immediately recalled some of my memories from the past when I was traveling. Luckily, I took a picture when I was in Shanghai because usually, I don't really take pictures when I was traveling. This task doesn't really take me that long to do since I already know what in mind that I want to do. Out of all tasks, this task was the most tiring one because I had to do a lot of stuff here, but I still enjoy it.
