LECTURES
Week 4
On week 4, there were no lecture classes as our lecturer was grading our previous project.
Week 5
During week 5, we had a general meeting talking about our present project. Mr. Asrizal was giving tips on how to make the questions for the data collection.
INSTRUCTIONS
Project 2: Field Study
For the second project, we are required to conduct a data-gathering collection process about the culture with relevance to the theme and our research objectives. We can collect data by doing online interviews or actual physical material visual research of the selected culture.
During the process of making this project, we were thinking about making an online survey and also interviewing a Balinese person for our project for the data-gathering collection process.
Online Survey
For the online survey, we prepared 14 questions to ask the public about Nyepi.
Questions:
- How old are you?
- What is your nationality?
- Have you been to Bali, Indonesia?
- How interesting do you think Balinese culture is?
- Have you ever heard of Nyepi day in Bali
- Do you know that Nyepi is a day fo silence? (The island is completely shut down)
- Which of these Nyepi rules are you aware of?
- Do you know that local people perform several ceremonies on Nyepi? (Ngembak Geni , Ogoh-Ogoh, Omed-omedan)
- Have you ever participated on any Nyepi event?
- What do you think is the most interesting part of Nyepi culture?
- Are you aware of what the tourists should and shouldn't do on Nyepi day?
- How much do you like to travel and learn about other culture?
- Are you interested in knowing more about the Nyepi culture?
- Would you like to visit Bali on Nyepi?
We ended up with 71 responses for the online survey.
Online Interview
For the online interview, we asked a total of 10 questions to a Balinese person, Wendy.

Questions:
- What is Nyepi day for Balinese people?
- What do Balinese do on Nyepi?
- How do you see Nyepi?
- Do you often or usually participate in celebrating Nyepi? If yes, how?
- So we know that there are many tourists in Bali right. Do you think most of them have respected Balinese culture?
- As a local person, do you think that the tourists are being ignorant, or uneducated?
- What things that maybe tourists don't know about Nyepi?
- Do you think Nyepi is a mystical culture?
- Would you encourage people to learn more about Nyepi? Why?
-
What do you think will be an effective way to educate non-local people
about Nyepi?
The answers from Wendy are then saved for the presentation.
Presentation
Upon completing collecting the data from both survey and interview we then proceed to make our presentation. For this project, we are required to give out the full presentation and the summarized presentation.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Asrizal gave a suggestion to revolve around the research question to make the questions for the data-gathering collection.
Ms. Jinchi gave feedback for our presentation and said that our observation skills are organized and each method's purpose is explained quite clearly. Half of the presentation was about the basic research about Nyepi from a YouTube search, which is actually the initial research when we first embarked on this topic since the first assignment. The survey and interview data should inform about your ideation direction next. The details of the data collected could not be located. The PDF submitted is from the presentation slides, which are simplified. The design of the slides should also consider where the small frames of presenters will appear. Parts of some of the slides with important text are cut off by those frames.
REFLECTIONS
During the process of making this project, I was quite confused about what kind of questions I wanted to add to the survey. It was quite difficult to think about the questions but eventually, the survey questions were done thanks to my groupmates. In the process of making this project, everyone in the group was quite confused about what contents are needed to be added to the presentation and we ended up getting negative feedback from the lecturer. I hope that the next project can be done better.
